A LARGE CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER‘BAJIXIANG’BOX AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
清乾隆 剔彩八吉祥纹八方盖盒
modelled with eight rounded sides raised on a short spreading foot, the cover crispy carved through deep layers of lacquer with a stylised chrysanthemum bloom framed by ruyi pendants to the centre, encircled by bajixiang (’Eight Buddhist Emblems’) evenly scattered amidst various leafy floral sprays, reserved against a green and yellow lacquer diaper ground, encircled by ruyi pendant and keyfret borders, decorated to each side with a panel of basketry amongst lotuses borne on meandering leaves, the box similarly decorated, the interiors and base lacquered black
